Samuel R. Andress is the founding director of the Los Osos Band & Color Guard Program. He is a native of Lake Havasu City, Arizona and a graduate of Lake Havasu High School. Mr. Andress holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education from the University of Arizona (Tucson), a Master’s Degree in Music Education from Azusa Pacific University, and is pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in wind band conducting from the Claremont Graduate University. Mr. Andress has studied conducting with Dr. Stephen J. Paul, and Dr. Stephen Gothold. He left Arizona in 2001 and relocated in Southern California to complete his student-teaching assignment under the supervision of Don Jaramillo at Etiwanda High School and taught seventh and eighth grade band and choir at Upland Junior High School prior to his appointment at Los Osos. Mr. Andress is a member of Pi Kappa Phi National Fraternity, and the Sons of the American Revolution. His professional affiliations include the San Bernardino County Music Educators Association, the California Band Directors Association, the Winter Guard Association of Southern California, the International Trombone Association, the Music Educators’ National Conference, and the College Band Directors’ National Association. Additionally, he is an active member of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, as serves that organization as a field show adjudicator. Fostering a belief in life-long learning, he actively attends music conferences, and has recently attended the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, the Texas Music Educators’ Association conference in San Antonio, and the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) show in Anaheim, in addition to his annual trips to Fresno for the California All-State conference and other various conferences throughout Southern California. He co-authored 20 Things You Can Do Tomorrow To Improve Your Program: Simple Steps To Building & Sustaining Quality with colleague Scott Bonner, and presented that clinic to the fall 2008 conference of the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association. In March of 2008, Mr. Andress was honored to return to his hometown to guest-conduct the 30th anniversary concert of the founding of the Lake Havasu Regional Orchestra. Under Sam Andress’ leadership, the Los Osos Band & Color Guard has earned a reputation for excellence in all areas of ensemble performance, and will continue to evolve into one of Southern California’s finest.
Scott Bonner, in addition to his duties as a trumpet teacher at Los Osos High School, is the director of bands at Day Creek Intermediate School in Etiwanda, California. He is currently in his 21st year in the Etiwanda School District, having taught band at Day Creek Intermediate, Summit Intermediate School, and Etiwanda Intermediate School. He has additionally taught band at 7 of the district elementary schools. Previously he taught in the Pomona Unified School District for four years. Mr. Bonner received his Bachelor of Arts in Music from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and received his Master of Music Education from the University of Redlands in Redlands, California. He has taught musicians ranging from beginning to the University level. In addition to teaching band, Mr. Bonner taught orchestra for the Saturday Conservatory of Music in Pasadena, California for six years, where he conducted two of the four orchestras. The Saturday Conservatory serves low-income students from Los Angeles County. Mr. Bonner conducts numerous clinics for bands at all levels. He has conducted numerous honor bands as well. His band method “Band Boot Camp” is being used in numerous school districts. He is a composer of several pieces for band and orchestra. Mr. Bonner is currently pursuing his juris doctorate.
Eric Evans, is the director of bands at Vineyard Junior High School in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Mr. Evans graduated from California State University, Los Angeles with a degree in Music Education. His primary instrument is Trombone, and he has studied under Ashley Alexander, Roy Main and currently with Stewart Undem. Mr. Evans has worked at all levels of education from elementary school to college. He has spent time during the summer at Idaho State University working with the low brass section of the Marching Band. He started his career in Baldwin Park California at Jones Jr. High School teaching 5th grade beginning strings and 6th grade beginning band at Vineland Elementary, Foster Elementary and Central Elementary from 1992 – 2001. While at Jones Mr. Evans developed very successful and award winning Marching Band and Concert Band Programs. Mr. Evans began working for the Alta Loma School District in 2002 and has developed a well-respected, high quality music program that has received high awards and high ratings for Vineyard Jr. High School since his tenure. Mr. Evans has been a member of the 562 Air Force Band, The Air National Guard Band of the Southwest, for the past 21 years. His duties in this organization consist of Asst. Low Brass Section Leader, NCOIC of Unit Moral and NCOIC of Awards and Decorations for the unit. Being in the 562 Air Force Band has taken Mr. Evans to play in such places as Australia, Dominican Republic, New Jersey, West Virginia, Delaware, Washington D.C., Florida, Washington State, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Alaska, and both Northern and Southern California and most recently in multiple cities in Peru.
Shalena Gonzales has taught color guard at Los Osos High School since 2003. She is a native of Baldwin Park, California, and a graduate of Baldwin Park High School. Shalena holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from California State University Los Angeles and is also trained as a dental hygienist. In addition to teaching the color guard at Los Osos, Shalena is also a regional auditor for the Sports Authority. Her job takes her to stores all thoughout Southern California, Arizona, and Nevada. Prior to her appointment at Los Osos, Shalena Gonzales taught award-winning color guards for 6 years in the Baldwin Park Unified School District, at Holland Junior High School and Jones Junior High School, under the supervision of Danny Wagner. She performed four times with the color guard of the Pasadena City College Tournament of Roses Honor Band, under the color guard instruction of Tom Vindiola.
Paul Kane began teaching the clarinet section at Los Osos High School in 2009. He attended Yucaipa High School (class of 2006) and received his bachelors in Music Education from the University of Redlands. He has been playing the clarinet for 11 years and is currently studying with Kathryn Nevin. Paul has been teaching privately in the Redlands/Yucaipa area for the past 4 years, and will be rejoining the Redlands Symphony for their next season as part of the auditioned student pool. He is currently student teaching with Mr. Bonner at Day Creek Intermediate, and Mr. Andress. at Los Osos High which will be his final stepping stone to becoming a Band Director.
Danny Lopez has taught marching band visual and coached the drum majors at Los Osos High School since 2006. Danny began his work as a marching instructor at Nogales High School, under the supervision of John Vorwald. He has also taught marching basics at Baldwin Park High School, Ohio State University, and the University of Hawaii. In addition to his passion for marching band, Danny has a background in the retail field as a district manager. He currently works for TELACU Residential Management, as a property supervisor. His duties include dealing with property management for the elderly and disabled, in conjunction with HUD. Of all his endeavors, Danny’s #1 job is as the proud father to his baby boy, Holton.
Jose Lujan has taught color guard at Los Osos High School since 2003. He is a native of Baldwin Park, California, and a graduate of Baldwin Park High School. Jose began his teaching career in 1998 in the Baldwin Park Unified School District, where he taught award-winning color guards at Holland Middle School and Baldwin Park High School. Jose is currently a student at Mt. San Antonio College. He plans to major in child development and to one day become an elementary school teacher.
Maureen McGuire has taught horn at Los Osos High School since 2007. She is a graduate of the University of Southern California where she earned her Bachelor of Music in performance. After graduation she spent two and one half years living in Mexico City as a member of the Filharmonica de la Ciudad de Mexico. This experience afforded her the opportunity to travel around the world as well as throughout most of the country of Mexico. Currently Mrs. McGuire teaches private lessons, freelances in the Inland Empire, and teaches full time at Banyan Elementary School. In 2006 she completed her Master's Degree in Educational Leadership at Azusa Pacific University.
Dave Natal has taught percussion at Los Osos High School since 2005. He is a native of Fontana, California, and a graduate of Etiwanda High School. He began his percussion career at the age of nine and has since performed with such noted ensembles as the Concord Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, the Riverside Community College Indoor Percussion Ensemble, and has worked as a percussionist at Disneyland. As a performer, Dave has appeared in the SUM 41 music video “Underclass Hero” and has won many awards, including the Fred Sanford High Percussion Trophy, 2007 Drum Corps International World Championship, and the 2007 WGI World Championship. Currently, Dave plays drumset for the Sunrise Worship Arts Team, which has opened for such Grammy winning artists as Mary Mary, Israel Houghton, and Cece Winans. He is a proud member of the Vic Firth educational team and the Percussive Arts Society. Dave is currently finishing his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona with the hope of marrying his technical knowledge with his love of music to create new advancements in the world of percussion.
Jered Sherrill has taught percussion at Los Osos High School since 2008. Originally from Visalia, California, he attended Mt. Whitney High School, where he played under the directon of Scott Deering. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Master of Arts in Percussion Performance from California State University Fresno. He has taught percussion at numerous high schools in the Fresno/Visalia area including Exeter Union, Buchanan, Clovis East, Bullard and the Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band. Additionally he was the front ensemble arranger and technician for Fever Drum and Bugle Corps. He is a prolific arranger and composer for various percussion ensembles and marching bands. During his graduate work Jered was the Graduate Assistant conductor of the Fresno State Percussion Ensemble and taught Undergraduate studio lessons. Mr. Sherrill presented his research into the function of musical pitch in speech, Refinement of Linguistic Intonation Patterns through Use of Musical Criteria, at the Central California Research Symposium. He is a member of Mu Phi Epsilon Professional Music Fraternity. His professional affiliations are Key Poulan Music, California Band Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference, and the Percussive Arts Society. His principal teachers include Matthew Darling, Kathryn Bumpass, Dave Gabrielson, Benjamin Boone, and Gary Gilroy.
Karmen Suter has taught flute at Los Osos High School since 2009. She holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan in flute performance. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Southern California in music education. She also spent a semester at Indiana University serving as an associate instructor in the music education department. Her principal teachers have included Amy Porter (former principal flutist of the Atlanta Symphony), Gary Woodward (principal flutist of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra) and Kathryn Lukas (former principal flute of the Santa Fe Opera Company). Ms. Suter currently serves as adjunct faculty for the University of Redlands where she teaches courses in music theory, history and education. She is the acting artistic director and flutist for the Austin, Texas based new music concert series Audio Inversions as well as the principal flutist for the Austin Pops Orchestra. She is also a recent winner of the National Flute Association Convention Performers competition and an active chamber musician having performed with countless ensembles throughout the country. She is a musician dedicated to the music of our time and to exploring new and unique performance styles. She frequently collaborates with emerging and established composers to create new compositions for flute. Ms. Suter performs and teaches in the Los Angeles area where she lives with her husband, composer Anthony Suter.
